FTF and gpl-violations.org release "Reporting and fixing license violations" guide
Dec 9, 2008FSFE's Freedom Task Force and gpl-violations.org have released a guide with practical tips for solving common Free Software license compliance issues.
Consultancy
Loco is one of few companies in the world that offers commercial GPL
license compliance engineering services. Our services include, but are not
limited to:
- GPL compliance analysis of devices. Within a very
short timeframe you will receive a report with a list of GPL and LGPL
violations we have found, and recommended resolutions. All information is
treated as confidential, and we will work under an NDA at your
request.
- GPL compliance engineering training. This will allow you to perform GPL checks yourself. Training can be done onsite, or at our office.
- Contacts with high profile Free Software projects. We have very good contacts with highly visibile Free Software projects, that make alternative firmware for routers and storage devices, storage projects and desktop projects. We can act as an intermediary between you and these projects and see how they can help eachother. We have experience with this.
Loohuis Consulting also provides the GPL Compliance Engineering Guide.
The increased use of Free Software requires an understanding of the licenses in use as well as best practice in deployment, deployment processes and compliance. Loco employees have practical experience in this field, especially with regards to embedded devices.
Binary Analysis Tool
Together with Opendawn, Loco has developed the Binary Analysis Tool. The Binary Analysis Tool is a modular framework that assists with auditing the contents of compiled software. It makes it easier and cheaper to look inside technology, and this helps compliance and due diligence activities.
The tool is freely available to everyone. The community can use it and participate in further development, and work together to help reduce errors when shipping devices or products containing Free and Open Source Software. Development has been sponsored by NLnet Foundation, and support provided by Linux Foundation.
